EU foreign policy in a contested international environment

Call for papers for 2nd NORTIA Research Workshop

The NORTIA research symposium focuses on the EU’s foreign policy in the context of enhanced contestation over global norms and values. It aims to assess the implications for the EU and for its foreign policy of direct and diffuse challenges to the Union’s preferred liberal world order. It further aims to address in what ways the changing external context constrains and/or enables EU foreign policy. We welcome papers that analyse potential changes in the EU’s own position in response to the contestation over global norms as well as papers examining to what extent and on what basis external actors as well as broader systemic forces challenge the EU’s policies and perspectives. Contributions may focus for example on the EU’s relations with specific actors or regimes, including changing relationships with old and new partners (such as for example Russia, China, Turkey, India, Brazil, South Africa) as well as non-state actors (civil society organisations or international organisations). We also welcome papers addressing how global contestation affects the contents and structure of specific EU policies in issue areas such as the for example security, development, external migration, as well as the connection between such external policies.

We welcome paper proposals by 15 April. Please send your proposal to Helene Sjursen helene.sjursen@arena.uio.no.

The workshop is going to take place in the framework of the 2nd NORTIA network conference, 5-7 June 2019 in Poznan. It brings togehter the NORTIA members for our annual research and teaching exchange on European foreign policy and offers exchange opportunities with policy-makers and other experts.

Two bursaries for UACES members will be available to support the participation of non-NORTIA members . Please indicate in your application, if you would like to apply for one of those spots.
